Studio-grade FDM for functional parts

FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) is ideal when you need strong, practical parts quickly and cost‑effectively — from prototypes and fit checks to end‑use components. We run a multi‑printer workflow with consistent profiles, documented settings where needed, and quality checks before dispatch.

If you’re after ultra‑fine surface finish or micro‑detail, see our Resin 3D Printing service.

Best for

  • Functional prototypes and iterative development
  • Brackets, adapters, mounts, clips and covers
  • Enclosures and housings
  • Jigs, fixtures and workshop tooling
  • Small‑batch production (dozens to hundreds of parts)

Build size & large parts

For single‑piece prints we can produce parts up to 420 × 420 × 480 mm, with smaller standard volumes available for faster turnaround. When a model exceeds a single build volume, we can split it into sections, add alignment features (tabs/pins/slots where appropriate), and then bond or assemble the final part. This approach keeps overall part size flexible without sacrificing fit.

Materials & colours

We print reliably in PLA, PETG, ABS, ASA, Nylon, TPU, and carbon‑filled PLA.

For colour options, we keep a broad in‑stock range for everyday work (especially PLA and core PETG colours). Engineering materials (ABS/ASA/Nylon/TPU) are typically stocked in practical tones (black/white/natural), and we can source specific brands or colours on request.

For a deeper breakdown of material properties and recommendations, see Materials.

Quality, accuracy & tolerances

Most functional jobs are printed at 0.16–0.20 mm layer height for an excellent balance of speed and finish. For finer detail we can go down to 0.06–0.12 mm, and for faster draft parts up to 0.28–0.30 mm.

For dimensional work, we target accuracy up to ±0.2% for suitable geometries and materials. Where a project requires tighter fit or repeatability, we can run test prints and calibration for the specific part/material combination and iterate until the fit is right — supported by measured QC on critical dimensions.

Finishing & add‑ons

Standard post‑processing includes support removal and basic clean‑up. Optional services (quoted case‑by‑case) include:

  • Careful support clean‑up and cosmetic finishing
  • Sanding and surface preparation
  • Splitting and bonding/assembly for large parts
  • Heat‑set brass inserts for robust threaded fastening
  • Hardware supply (from stock or sourced) and pre‑assembly checks
  • Embedded NFC chips inside printed items (tags, keychains, accessories)
  • Priming and painting (project dependent)

Turnaround & delivery

Typical lead time for small orders is 2–3 business days. Urgent prints can sometimes be dispatched the same day (subject to print time and schedule). For larger quantities (50–500+ parts), lead time is typically 3–7 days, depending on material, settings and post‑processing.

We offer local collection near Cambridge, UK‑wide shipping, and international delivery on request.

Getting a quote

Every part is different — geometry, material, settings, supports, finishing and quantity all affect cost and lead time. For an accurate quote, send your file(s) and tell us:

  • What the part is for (strength / heat / appearance)
  • Any critical dimensions or fit requirements
  • Preferred material/colour (if known)
  • Quantity and deadline

If you’re unsure about material or settings, we’ll recommend options so you don’t pay for specs you don’t need.

File types

STL is ideal for quick quoting. We can also work with STEP and other common CAD/export formats — if you’re unsure, attach what you have and we’ll advise.

Need repeatable batches?

If you need sample approval, repeat runs, invoices, or an NDA for commercial work, see Batch & Commercial Orders.
